5 Tips for Implementing ISO 9001 Effectively

The ISO 9001:2015 is one of those international standards that are worth way more than just the certification itself.  They can be the catalyst for improved efficiency and business results if you’re implementing it for the right reasons.  Instead of seeing it as an administrative exercise, by seeing it as an opportunity you can truly take your company to the next level.

Here are 5 tips for implementing ISO 9001 effectively in your organization:

1. Get Buy-In From Your Workforce

The ISO 9001 is not something that you can just impose on your employees.  You want to work with them and communicate clearly to help them understand why it’s important.  When you do this, you can get buy-in from your key personnel which makes it much easier to roll out whatever changes might be needed.  Get this support early and you’ll have a much more efficient system.

2. Take Your Time

The sorts of systems that ISO 9001 looks at take time to build.  So many companies try to rush the process and end up making mistakes that they only discover later on.  Take your time and realize that this is a long-term process for the good of your company.

3. Set Clear Objectives

As you undergo this process, it’s important that people know where things are heading.  Set clear objectives from the beginning that lay out what you’re trying to build, and you’ll get much better results because everyone will be pulling in the same direction.

4. Don’t Overdo the Paperwork

While ISO 9001 does require clear documentation, it doesn’t mean that you have to go overboard.  Conciseness and clarity are much more important than covering every inch of the system in tremendous detail.  When you do this, you risk losing the forest for the trees.  Rather focus on the important pieces and let your paperwork be easily readable and understandable.

5. Set the Tone From the Top

At the end of the day, your teams will look to you to set the example.  Management needs to be fully bought into the project and set the tone for everyone else to follow.  This can go a long way to nurture the right culture throughout your organization – making everything else easier as a result.
